Apple Stores reportedly offer no-contract iPhones


Some US Apple retail stores have reportedly begun selling iPhone 3Gs without a contract. Apple Insider reports the 8GB model is available for $599 and the 16GB for $699, the standard retail price without AT&T subsidies.

The iPhones are still locked to AT&T service, but third-party unlocking tools could theoretically allow the phones to work with other GSM carriers including T-Mobile and Metro PCS. However, those networks do not support the higher 3G data speeds offered by AT&T.

Samsung’s First Wimax Device Spotted


Today Samsung shared details on the unannounced SWD-M100 Mondi mobile Wimax device for the Clear network. According to Samsung, the Mondi has a touch screen and can access the Internet via Clear’s mobile Wimax network. Based on the picture seen via Samsung’s RSS feed, the Mondi has a slide-up screen that reveals a four-row QWERTY keyboard, similar to the Nokia N810 Internet tablet. It also has a D-pad and several function buttons placed on the front face of the device. Samsung and Clear have not announced this device, and it is not known when it will come to market. Samsung claims it is the first handheld Wimax device in the U.S.

HTC Magic Approved by FCC with 3G for T-Mobile USA


Documents seen on the FCC web site reveal some information about a new HTC phone apparently bound for T-Mobile’s network. The SAPP300 has been approved with 1700/2100MHz WCDMA, as well as quad-band GSM/EDGE, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Sapphire (”SAPP”) was the internal codename used for the HTC Magic, which was announced in February at the Mobile World Congress trade show. The FCC has already approved the HTC Magic SAPP100, which includes 900/2100MHz WCDMA for use in Europe. This newer approval points to a release of a U.S. variant of the HTC Magic.
